Access first, geology second

On most of the island the first question is “what’s the soil?”. In Bingin and Padang Padang it’s “what can physically get there?”. Plots above the surf breaks are reached by lanes that narrow to footpaths, sometimes with steps, often with a warung and a scooter park in the pinch point. Our free visit here is a measuring exercise: gate widths, turning radii, overhead cables, the load-bearing question of whether a mini can cross that little bridge. Only then does the quote get written — and it names the machine, not just the price.

Once in, geology takes over: the same Bukit coral limestone as Uluwatu, often with even thinner topsoil near the cliff. That means hydraulic breaker work for pool pits, footings and septic tanks, with the spoil crushed on site into driveway base because trucking it out through those lanes is expensive theatre. On tight Bingin jobs, reusing rock isn’t just green — it’s the difference between a viable budget and an absurd one.

Recent work here: a 54 m³ pool pit excavated behind a finished villa with a mini walked in over trackway and every bucket shuttled out by barrow — four days, zero damage to the landscaping; hand-split footings two meters from a neighbour’s bedroom wall; and a stepped gabion terrace packed with the client’s own broken limestone.
