The frontier plots are the overgrown ones

The best-priced land in Bali right now — Seseh and Cemagi, Kedungu, the ridges above Ubud — is rarely a neat lawn. It’s abandoned paddy gone to scrub, a coconut grove nobody harvested in a decade, or honest jungle. Owners often overestimate this stage: a 10-are plot that looks apocalyptic usually clears in under a week. The trick is doing it in the right order, with the right things kept.

Clearing is a plan, not a rampage

Day one is a walk, not a machine. We tag keep-trees, find the property pins (you’d be amazed how often the jungle has eaten them), locate the subak channel we must not touch, and agree the debris route. Then the sequence: brush and light vegetation first, trees sectioned down, stumps and root plates grubbed out, green waste hauled. The plot you get back is not just “empty” — it’s readable: you can finally see the slope, the views and the water paths, which is exactly what your architect needs next.

Roots: the part cheap clearing skips

Anyone with a chainsaw can make vegetation disappear above ground. The expensive mistakes are below: bamboo rhizome left under a future pool deck, a teak stump quietly rotting into a void under a slab. Grubbing — machine-ripping the root systems out — is the unglamorous half of the job and it’s why our clearing includes it by default. If a quote you’re comparing is much cheaper, ask them where the roots go. The answer is usually “nowhere”.

Tree removal and stump grinding in Bali — price per tree

Tree removal in Bali is priced per tree, by trunk diameter at chest height and by what stands next to it. In open ground a tree comes down in one cut and one pull; beside a wall, a pool or a neighbour’s roof it is rigged and sectioned top-down with ropes, which takes longer and costs more. We do not leave stumps to rot under a future slab: instead of grinding them down, we grub stump and root plate out whole with the excavator in the same visit, and backfill the hole in layers.

Banyan and sacred trees. Large banyans, trees shading a temple and anything the village considers significant are never cut on our say-so: we speak to the banjar first, and sometimes a small ceremony comes before the saw. Most garden and scrub species on your own land need no permit. Haul-away. Branches are chipped on site; trunks and green waste leave in 7 m³ trucks at from IDR 950,000 per load to a legal green-waste site, and hardwood logs such as teak or mahogany are stacked at the boundary — they are yours. Taking out one or two trees without clearing the whole plot is a normal job for us; the mobilization (IDR 1.5–2.5 million) is the part worth sharing with other work. Your topsoil is worth keeping

The top 20–30 cm of a jungle plot is years of accumulated fertility. Scraped into trucks it costs you money twice — once to dump it, once to buy garden soil back after the build. We strip topsoil first and stockpile it in a corner, covered. On a typical Seseh plot that’s 40–60 m³ of soil your landscaper doesn’t have to purchase. Owners who’ve built before ask for this by name; now you can too.

What clearing costs in 2026

Light overgrowth from IDR 1,200,000/are, heavy jungle with removal from IDR 4.5 million/are, big trees priced individually. A real example: 12 are of dense growth in Seseh — cleared, grubbed, hauled, topsoil stockpiled in four working days — comes to just under IDR 55 million at our October 2026 rates.
