Driveway Construction in Bali — Concrete, Paving Stone & Gravel

A Bali driveway fails from underneath, not from the top: uncompacted fill, no fall, no drain, and the first wet season turns paving into a puddle. We build drives the way we build roads — cut to formation, compacted sub-base, drainage first, surface last.

What a driveway build includes

  • Survey and levels. Fall away from the house, gate clearance, turning radius and where water goes when 80 mm falls in an hour.
  • Excavation to formation. Typically 250–400 mm below finished level, spoil removed or reused in landscaping.
  • Sub-base. 150–250 mm of graded limestone or crushed rock, compacted in layers with a plate compactor or roller — the part most Bali driveways skip.
  • Drainage. Channel drains at the gate and garage, a French drain along the uphill edge on sloping plots, soakaway sized to the surface area.
  • Surface. Reinforced concrete (broom, exposed-aggregate or stamped), paving stones on a sand bed, or compacted gravel with edge restraint.
  • Edges and finishes. Concrete kerbs, planting strips, lighting conduit sleeves laid before the surface goes down.

Which surface for which plot

Reinforced concrete

The workhorse for steep Bukit and Ubud drives: 120–150 mm slab with mesh, expansion joints every 4–5 m, textured for grip on wet slopes. Lowest maintenance, and the only sensible choice above a 12% gradient.

Paving stones (paving block)

The most common Bali villa finish — concrete pavers or natural stone on a compacted sand bed over a proper sub-base. Individual stones can be lifted for repairs or services; the sub-base decides whether they stay level.

Gravel and compacted limestone

Cheapest per m² and the best match for rice-field and jungle settings, provided edge restraint and drainage stop it migrating downhill. We use graded 20–40 mm stone over compacted base, not loose river pebbles.

Permeable and grass-grid drives

Plastic or concrete grid pavers filled with gravel or grass keep run-off on your land — increasingly requested in Canggu and Pererenan where drainage to the road is not available.

Driveway questions

How long does a villa driveway take to build?

Excavation and sub-base 1–2 days, concrete 1 day plus 7 days curing before vehicles, paving 2–3 days for 80 m². Wet-season builds are sequenced around the rain.

Can you build a driveway on a steep Bukit or Ubud plot?

Yes — reinforced concrete with a textured finish, cross-drains and a French drain on the uphill side. We machine-cut the formation rather than pouring over fill.

Do I need a permit for a driveway in Bali?

Not for a driveway inside your own boundary. A new crossing onto a public road or a kerb cut should be cleared with the banjar and, for larger roads, the Dinas PU.

Why does my existing driveway sink and puddle?

Almost always uncompacted fill under the surface and no fall or drain. We can lift pavers, rebuild the sub-base and relay them — usually cheaper than a new surface.
