Which surface for which plot

Reinforced concrete

The workhorse for steep Bukit and Ubud drives: a 120–150 mm slab with mesh, expansion joints every 4–5 m, textured for grip on wet slopes. Lowest maintenance, and the only sensible choice above a 12% gradient.

Paving stones (paving block)

The most common Bali villa finish — concrete pavers or natural stone on a compacted sand bed over a proper sub-base. Individual stones can be lifted for repairs or services; the sub-base decides whether they stay level.

Gravel and compacted limestone

Cheapest per m² and the best match for rice-field and jungle settings, provided edge restraint and drainage stop it migrating downhill. We use graded 20–40 mm stone over a compacted base, not loose river pebbles.

Permeable and grass-grid drives

Plastic or concrete grid pavers filled with gravel or grass keep run-off on your own land — increasingly requested in Canggu and Pererenan, where drainage to the road simply is not available.

Driveways on slopes

Anything steeper than about 12% wants concrete, and concrete on a slope wants three things done right. First, the formation: we cut the drive into firm ground with the machine rather than casting over loose fill — fill creeps downhill and takes the slab with it. Second, grip: a smooth trowelled surface is a toboggan run in the wet, so we broom-finish across the line of travel or press grooves into the surface while it is still green. Third, water: rain accelerates down a sloped drive, so we break the run with steel-grated cross-drains cast into the slab, give the surface a cross-fall so water leaves sideways into a ditch rather than arriving at your garage door, and on the steepest Bukit lanes cast in short panels with construction joints — so a future repair is one panel, not one driveway.

Drainage along the drive

A driveway is a roof you park on: 100 m² of drive sheds around 10 m³ of water in an hour of hard rain, and that water has to be given somewhere to go on your own land. Along the uphill edge we run a kerb or an open ditch to catch what the slope sends down; where the drive meets lawn or planting, a gravel French drain with perforated pipe takes the seepage; at the gate and garage, channel drains catch the sheet flow before it gets inside. Everything discharges to a soakaway sized to the paved area — not onto the neighbour's plot and not onto the road. From site road to finished driveway

If you are building, don't pay for the same corridor twice. The temporary access road that carries your mixers and trucks — geotextile and compacted sirtu — is most of a permanent driveway's base already. After handover we regrade it, top it up, and either finish it as clean gravel or cast concrete over it: planned this way from the start, the driveway costs you little more than the surface, because the base was bought during construction. The same logic scales to the whole plot. If the land still needs clearing, grading or trenching, fold the driveway into a single site preparation package instead of mobilizing a crew for it separately — the machines are already there, and the utility sleeves go under the drive before the surface goes down, not through it after.
