Limestone Excavation in Uluwatu

On the Bukit you don’t dig — you break. Uluwatu pools, footings, tanks and driveways are carved into fossil reef with hydraulic breakers, and we’ve been carving them for years: test dig first, rock band priced in writing, spoil crushed into your own road base.

Hydraulic breaker excavating limestone bedrock for a villa pool in Uluwatu Bali

Building on a fossil reef

Uluwatu’s cliffs advertise the geology: the entire peninsula is coral limestone lifted out of the sea, wearing a thin red topsoil like a rug on concrete. For owners this means every serious excavation — pool pits, footings, septic tanks — is breaker work, priced per m³ of rock, not soil. Quotes that ignore this fact don’t survive contact with the ground; ours start with a free test dig so the band is measured before you sign anything.

The compensations are real. Limestone cuts hold vertical faces indefinitely — no collapsing pit walls, no shoring drama. Broken spoil crushes into the Bukit’s best road base, so most Uluwatu clients get their driveway foundation free from their own pool. And rock that still has surplus often sells; we’ve closed jobs where the disposal line read zero. From Suluban to the temple side and back toward Pecatu, our breaker calendar stays comfortably full.

Recent Uluwatu work: a 74 m³ pool and spa pit broken and trimmed in nine days, strip footings for a clifftop villa with hand-split edges two meters from a neighbour’s wall, and 160 m of utility trench cut through crust to bring PLN power in from the road. Neighbouring Bingin and Ungasan run on the same stone — if your plot is anywhere on the plateau, the test dig comes to you free.

FAQ

Earthworks in Uluwatu — FAQ

Is every Uluwatu plot really solid rock?

Essentially yes: the whole Bukit is uplifted coral limestone under 20–80 cm of red soil. Anything deeper than a garden bed — pools, footings, septic tanks — is rock work. The free test dig confirms where your rock starts and how hard it bites; details on the rock breaking page.

How much more does a pool cost in Uluwatu than in Canggu?

Roughly double: a soil pit that costs 8.5 million in Canggu runs from 16 million here, because every m³ is broken, not scooped. The consolation: limestone walls stand like poured concrete, and the spoil often becomes your driveway base for free.

Will breaker noise cause problems with neighbours and the banjar?

Not if it’s handled like we handle it: banjar notified before mobilization, nearest neighbours greeted with the schedule, agreed hours kept, silence for ceremonies. Uluwatu villages have hosted breakers for a decade — they distinguish crews with manners from crews without.

Is water really scarce for construction up here?

Scarcer than the coast: many plots run on delivered water or deep wells. Rock breaking itself needs little, but compaction and concrete do — we plan water logistics into the schedule and tell your builder what to book. Small thing; saves days.
