Excavator Rental in Bali vs Hiring an Earthworks Contractor
Every second owner who calls us has already priced a machine. “I can rent a PC50 for 3.4 million a day — why would I pay you per cubic meter?” It is a fair question, and sometimes the honest answer is: you shouldn’t pay us. Here are the real 2026 rental rates, the costs the rental quote leaves off the page, and the arithmetic on a 120 m³ villa pit done both ways.
What excavator rental costs in Bali in 2026
These are the rates we see quoted around Canggu, Denpasar and Tabanan this year, with operator and fuel in the number. Bare-machine deals exist between contractors, but no yard hands a villa owner an unmanned PC200.

A “day” in Bali is normally seven working hours, 08:00 to 16:00 with a lunch break, and overtime is charged by the hour. The same numbers sit on our pricing page, because we rent from the same market you do — we simply run our machines six days a week instead of three days a year.
What a rental day includes, and what it never does
The rental agreement covers a machine, a man and diesel. Everything else that turns a hole in the ground into a foundation is yours to organise:
- Setting out and levels — not included. The operator digs where you point and to the depth you shout. Nobody on the machine owns your engineer’s drawing.
- Trucks and disposal — not included. Spoil bulks up roughly 25% when you lift it, so 120 m³ in the ground is about 22 truckloads out of the gate.
- Hand trim to bearing — not included. The last 10 cm of a footing should never meet a bucket, and a rented bucket certainly won’t stop on its own.
- Dewatering — not included. In Canggu, Seseh and Sanur the pit fills faster than you can photograph it.
- Rain days — usually billed. Full rate or half rate, but billed.
- Breakdowns — negotiable, so negotiate. A burst hydraulic hose on a twelve-year-old PC200 costs you the day unless the contract says otherwise.
- Third-party damage — yours. Neighbour’s wall, PDAM main, PLN cable, the banjar’s drain. You are the principal on that site.
- The result — never included. Rental sells you machine hours. It does not sell you a pad at the right elevation.
The costs nobody writes on the rental quote
Mobilization. The flatbed is a separate 1.5–2.5 million, and it doubles if the truck can’t reach you: plenty of plots in Seseh, Bingin and above Ubud end with the machine walking the last 300–400 m, which is an hour each way you pay for. Fuel, when it isn’t included. A PC200 drinks 15–20 litres an hour — around 2 million a day at current industrial diesel. Check that line, twice. Idle men. Your labourers, your foreman and your rented truck all stand still whenever the machine does. Re-digging. The most expensive line of all, and it never appears in anyone’s quote: a pad dug 15 cm low is a pad you now import fill for, at grading rates plus trucks.
The maths: a 120 m³ foundation pit in Pererenan
Two-storey villa, paddy-clay plot, gang access that takes a mini but not a 20-ton, water table at 1.4 m. Three working days of machine time either way. Here is the same job priced as a rental and as a per-m³ contract:

On a perfect week it is a coin flip. Bali does not sell perfect weeks. Add one standing day of rain and one half-day breakdown — machine, truck, pump and crew all charged while nothing moves — and the rental route lands near IDR 30 million against a fixed 23.3. When renting genuinely wins
- You have a real site manager. Someone who reads drawings, holds a rotating laser and will stop the operator at 60 cm. If that person exists, rental is honestly cheaper.
- The scope is long and fuzzy. “Reshape the garden, pull that bank back, tidy the terraces.” Nobody can measure m³ of “looks right”. A four-day mini in Ubud at 13.6 million plus 2 million mobilization beats any attempt to price that by volume.
- You keep the spoil. If your cut becomes your fill on the same plot, the truck column disappears and rental gets much more attractive — read cut and fill explained before you assume it can’t.
- Little and often across a long build. One machine on call for a week of odd jobs — trenches, backfill, moving material, cleaning up — is simpler than eight separate quotes.
- Landscaping and soft works. Ponds, planting bays, garden terracing in Ubud or Jimbaran: the value is in the operator’s eye, not in a spreadsheet.
When renting quietly loses
- You have no survey. Without levels, “deep enough” is a guess, and a guess in foundation excavation is paid for twice.
- The result must hit engineer’s depths. Footing bottoms, pool shells, septic inverts — these are pass/fail, not roughly-right.
- Rock. On the Bukit — Uluwatu, Ungasan, Pecatu — a day rate on limestone is a lottery ticket. Some days the breaker wins 25 m³, some days 8. Per-m³ rock breaking at 380,000–550,000 moves that lottery to us.
- Wet season and high water tables. Standing-day charges plus pump hire turn a 3-day rental into a 6-day invoice in Sanur or low Canggu.
- Tight boundaries. Digging 1.5 m from a neighbour’s wall in Denpasar needs a shoring plan and someone who carries the consequence.
- Bad access. If the machine has to be ferried, walked or worked from a temporary site road, the day count you assumed is fiction.
Eleven questions to ask before you sign a rental
- Is the operator included, and who covers the day if he is sick?
- Is fuel included? If not, how many litres per day do you consider normal?
- Is the lowbed included both ways, and what happens if it can’t reach my gang?
- How many hours is a day, and what is the overtime rate?
- Rain days: full, half, or free?
- Breakdown: is a replacement machine guaranteed within 24 hours, or do I lose the day?
- Is the breaker attachment charged separately, and does this base machine even have the circuit for it?
- Which bucket sizes come with it — and is there a thumb?
- Who insures damage to third parties: neighbour’s wall, PDAM pipe, PLN cable?
- Who pays for machine recovery if it sinks in wet clay?
- Is any of this in writing, or is it a WhatsApp voice note?
Ask all eleven. A yard that answers all eleven calmly is a yard worth renting from, and the answers are exactly what you should compare against a contractor’s quote in Canggu, Pererenan or Kedungu.
Rent, contract, or a bit of both
Plenty of our clients do both, and we help them do it: we contract the measured, pass/fail work — footings, pool pit, utility trenches, drainage — then leave a mini on day rate for the loose landscaping tail at the end. What we would never advise is renting a machine to solve a problem nobody has measured yet. If you can only afford one professional on the job, make it the one with the level, not the one with the bucket.
